Fascinating trolling around some of th web sites where this gets a run to see the attitude of many Americans to the issue of gun control. A representation of some of the views I read:
A common idea was that if only the students had the right on campus to carry concealed weapons then some dead eye dick might have shot the gunmen early on in the piece.
Carrying concealed weapons will actually decrease the crime rate.
If you restrict firearm ownership then only the law abiding will obey & criminals will have even a greater advantage.
Owning weapons somehow guarantees democracy against the encroachment of anti-democratic forces.
What I suspect is a misinterpretation of the 2nd amendment to mean that it gives everyone the right to carry/own weapons (of any description). There also seems to be a common view that this amendment somehow guarantees democracy in the uS.
A common view that gun related crime is dramatically increasing in countries that restrict gun ownership in some way & that this increase is somehow the fault of legislation that restricts owning firearms.
That Hitler & the former Communist gov'ts of eastern Europe banned private ownership of firearms & so any attempt to restrict firearm ownership is in reality tainted by national socialism or communism & by inference anti-democratic.
Absolutely crazy logic!! A quick scan of reliable crime stats centered on gun crime quickly reveals the truth. The US has by far the highest rates of gun related crime of any western democracy. Far from making the country safer, guns have made it a far more dangerous place to live!
