On Friday next week I'm taking the school XIII to a secondary schools tournament at Palmaston North. 3 of the U15 team are in the squad - a good effort as this is an U19 comp. 5 games in 3 days Should be good - a couple of real talents in the team. Predictably several have been ''advised" not to play but vast majority have ignored this ;D Should be great fun

We came third out of twelve teams ;D We beat Wainuiomata College ;D We beat St Bernards (current Wellington Champions) ;D ;D ;D ;D We had formal enquiries about three of the squad from an NRL scout ;D so there could be another Mannering from Nelson College! AND - 11 of the squad will still be at school next year - so there is momentum to the team!! All in all a fantastic weekend.

Yep - that's Nelson College where I work. That season was two years before I moved to NZ. At the time the NZ government had a scholarship scheme for PNG students - and it was these boys who were the initial impetus for a RL team. For several seasons the majority of the 1st XIII were Kumels. The scheme ended in 2002 and the team is far more ethnically mixed now.

Two of the lads in the current team have been officially offered the chance to sign up for the NRL U20 comp - they're thinking about it.
