Went to the Gabba yesterday to watch the Lions play the Swans with some kiwi mates. The Lions got thumped and the game wasn't that interesting, although the toothless bogans I sat amongst were very entertaining.
Crowd: 29,000 (thereabouts).
My kiwi mates didn't mind the game and picked up the rules pretty quickly. I spent the whole time near the bar because my stupid mates got tickets in the unlicenced section.

Over the weekend I ran into an old mate of mine who is an AFL fan. He told me the Brisbane Lion have about 23,000 to 24,000 season ticket holders.
he also said they hiked the price of these tickets from $300 a season last year to $400 this year & they have been advised that the same tickets will be $500 next year.
They might be killing the golden goose etc.

Baz
the Brisbane v Melbourne AFL game live or near live into Brisbane rated 99,000 last Saturday night. (The delayed telecast of the RL match between the Broncos & Melbourne the night before rated 247,000 in Brisbane.)
The Sydney v Dockers AFL game played in rated 122,000 in Sydney the week before.
Both AFL games came a long last in their timespots.
BTW the live union test on Saturday (commenced at 5.30pm) rated 252,000 in Brisbane & 410,000 in Sydney.
I think we are all soccer players now.

Brisbane & Sydney aren't the only cities where the AFL TV ratings have slumped:
PS: the Lions v Essingdon (played in Melbourne) rated 63,000 in Brisbane last night. It was up against the union test & the Iron Chef.

Always good to read bad news about the afl rus. Now what sort of failure will it take to withdraw the lions & retreat to Victoria?

Baz the other night I went to tape the SBS program Top gear. However, I taped a Briz 31 program (in error) which is the local AFL show. It was screening the last bit of the AFL's country championship. A Victorian country team was playing an ACT team which was made largely of expat Victorians. The curtain raiser (under 16) was won by a Victorian team. The commentators (of this largely Brisbane program) were Victorians. All but one of the discussion panel were ex-Victorians;the other was from South Australia. The should rename the code "the VFL "again. What has the Sydney press been like about the AFL players bad behaviour & what had you made of the Seymour & Hunt incidents? www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,20002925-5003410,00.html

Its mentioned it but nothing big. To be honest haven't bothered to read about the Seymour or Hunt incidents. Seymour is alleged to have hit a woman? If that's the case hope they throw the book at him. Half time in the Parra Dragons game here. Ugghh!

This year 20AFL players have been or are due to face the courts on serious assault, drunken drivers etc. have a look here:
In the last three years 45 AFL players have tested positive to drugs (the type that got Wendell Sailor baned for 2 years) yet they couldn't be named because of some confidentially agreement.
They are worse than union players.

Falling tv ratings, poor strategic planning, arrogance leading to incompetence, low levels of junior participation! Aaaahhhh, music to my ears! Less juniors than ru I'd say too. All up good news on the afl front.
